Online Art Auction : The Florida Highwaymen

From the 1950’s through the 1980’s a group of twenty six self taught African American artists known as the "Florida Highwaymen" painted the Florida landscape and sold their paintings out of the trunks of cars. These artists used vivid colors to depict Florida’s natural beauty. The Florida Highwaymen painted palm trees, sunsets, the blue ocean waters and colorful tropical plants. On the weekends the Florida Highwaymen sold their paintings to local hotels, businesses and tourists for around $25 per painting. They can be found occasionally in online art auctions and galleries.

These talented artists used oil paint on upson board – a material similar to drywall – to create their original landscapes. The Florida Highwaymen were able to finish a painting in an hour or less. The paintings were often sold before the paint was dry. The frames were homemade out of crown molding, painted with house paint and gold paint. Online art auctions are a new way to purchase art.

The Florida Highwaymen are currently receiving national acclaim. Collecting Florida Highwaymen art has become an expensive hobby. Some can be found in online art auctions. Although many of the pieces were originally sold for around $25, they now fetch prices upwards of $5000. Some of the Highwaymen are still creating new works of original Florida art.

Online Art Gallery and Auction

artwork by n!satterfield
Artists have to be creative people in order to be successful. Now more than ever, you can get creative with your marketing strategy by putting your art business online. Online art auctions can help the artist because they offer a convenient way to make sure that your art is seen by a large number of people. Also, gallery fees for online art sales tend to be considerably less than with brick and mortar galleries. If you are an artist, jewelry maker, craftsperson, artisan, or crafter, you have probably struggled with the marketing and sales portion of art.

Putting your art pieces on the internet in an online art auction can be a great way to get noticed and a convenient way to sell your products without having the added expenses of gallery fees and booth rentals. Consider an online art auction for selling your products. You can set the starting bid and then see what the final outcome is. You can have the buyer pay the shipping costs so that you see more of the profit.

That translates to being able to spend more of your time and money on creating new art pieces to sell at the online art auction. You can be a more prolific miami artist and produce more art quickly. The more productive you are, the better your sales will be. People who decide they want to follow you online will be excited to see your next piece. It's a great ideal to open Facebook and Twitter accounts and post your latest piece with a link to your online auction. Before you know it you will have a thriving art business from home.

Selling Your Creative Pieces: Get Creative!

artwork of nsatterfield
If you are an artist, then you are obviously a creative person. However, for artists who want to sell art, the marketing end of the business often eludes them. If you can get creative with your artwork, then you can get creative with your marketing and sales tactics as well. Remember, your artwork needs to be sold in order to support you and your art supplies.

The first way that you need to get creative is in your work. Are you creating something truly unique? Is your work as individual as you are? Does your artwork stand out? Do you have a unique creative process that your buyers would like to know about? As an artist, it's important to create something genuinely unique and one of a kind. Put a lot of time and thought into your next set of art pieces and sell your artwork as unique, one of a kind pieces.

Next, get creative in how you market yourself. The art world has as much to do with the personality/persona of the artist as it does with the actual piece of artwork. You will need to attend gallery events, art fairs, craft fairs, etc. And you will need to talk to your customers about the artwork. Tell your customers about your creative process and your motivation for creating the piece. Customers are interested, or otherwise they wouldn't be there, so go ahead and talk to them about your artwork.

The web has a variety of tools for marketing your artwork. You can start your own artist blog where you feature photos and descriptions of your work. You can also sell your work in an online art gallery; display it on Flickr, Etsy, and Facebook. Getting creative with your marketing will help you to make a living by selling your artwork.

Artists: How Can You Make Money with Your Art?

artwork of N!Satterifield
Most artists that I know tend to produce a lot of artwork - beautiful pieces. But when it comes to marketing, selling, and actually making a living, they really don't know where to start. Here are a few tips on making money from your artwork. First of all, you have to work hard. Just like any other job, you have to put in full time hours and really plan to work. You must finish what you start before moving on to the next idea. Create, create, create! That's what you're good at.

Okay, now that you are viewing your artwork as your job, do you have enough quality pieces to sell at an art or craft fair? If you do, great! Now get out there and start attending some arts and crafts fairs. If you cannot afford to rent a booth by yourself, then split one two or three ways with other artists. At the same time, check online. There are several good online art galleries and online art auctions that want to work with you to help you sell your art, crafts, and jewelry.

Investigate your local artist groups. Many times if you are a member of your local arts league, you get discount or free artist booths at their events. Plus you can make a lot of great contacts and get first hand information on upcoming events and art shows. Being involved with a community of other artists is both rewarding and inspiring. So get out there and meet other artists!

The next important point is offering affordable artwork to your audience. If you have created beautiful, high priced paintings, then you're probably going to have to consider creating affordable matted prints, greeting cards, and other print materials in order to fund your business. These are items that you can print for yourself from home or you can find an affordable printer either locally or online to do the printing for you. If your artwork lends itself to the media, then consider also T-shirts, stickers, magnets, and calendars. Again, these can be ordered online quite affordably and will also lend themselves to online as well as event sales.

Online Art Auctions

Bored with shopping online? A fun way to shop online is to try an online art auction. Online art auctions offer unique, sometimes weird, sometimes exquisite art deals. An online art auction has every type of art under the sun from antique cars to fine oil paintings, to sculture, to origami! Take a look and shop around. You are sure to find something that you like at an online art auction.

Or maybe you want to sell your art but haven't found the right venue. Nothing is stopping you from putting your work up for auction at an online art auction. Whether you do fiber art, mixed media, traditional, or paper crafts, if you have a talent and a piece of artwork, you can sell it in an online art auction. Take some good quality photos, sign up for an account with an online art auction and start selling your work!

If you have purchased or inherited art that you now want to sell, you can put that art in an online art auction. Paintings, crafts, sculpture, and unique collectibles can be sold at an online art auction. What ever your particular area of interest in art, you can find a home for it in an online art auction.

Shopping at an Online Art Gallery

Interested in buying art online? If you are going to buy at an online art store, be sure to select an online art gallery that is reputable and offers quality online art sales.  Many people want to buy original paintings online. Some art buyers are interested in buying online art as an investment. Others want appealing works of art to decorate their home. You can find investment quality art online if you do your research. Be careful to check the company out thoroughly before purchasing expensive investment art online.

However, if you are on a budget, but still want original art to decorate your walls, look for online art pieces from emerging artists instead of investment quality art.
You can also purchase online art paintings from amateur and emerging artists for a very reasonable price. Shop for prints, watercolors, and original oils from a variety of artists at an online art gallery. Many online art galleries have sculptor, glass, and 3 dimensional art as well as paintings, prints, and posters.
